Dear Sorors of the Notable Nu Chapter, Family and Friends:
During the Homecoming 2022 Week, a Centennial Celebration of the chartering of Nu Chapter will be held on the campus of West Virginia State University in Institute, WV. Nu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was established on the campus of West Virginia State College on December 26, 1922 by one of our beloved founders, Sarah Merriwether Nutter, of Charleston, West Virginia. This represented the first Black Greek-letter undergraduate sorority in West Virginia established in the interest of Negro college women. Nu Chapter was the thirteenth undergraduate chapter to be founded with the purpose of the organization being to promote and encourage scholarship, create and perpetuate a feeling of sisterhood among its members, and to establish newer and higher ideals of womanhood. We are proud to say that Nu Chapter has endured for 100 years as sorors worked to “capture a vision fair” through exemplary service.
From October 6-8, 2022 various activities have been planned to celebrate this momentous occasion. Our events will be open to the public and we look forward to your participation as we join with our alumni and friends on this special occasion. Through the years, Nu Chapter’s goal has focused on service to all mankind. Nu Chapter sorors have utilized service, sisterhood, scholarship and sophistication to continue the aim of our beloved sisterhood. The tradition will continue through the years. The 1922 issue of The Institute, WV Monthly provides a summation of the tasks of Alpha Kappa Alpha women that are still relevant in the 21st century:
“There is a great work to be done by Alpha Kappa Alpha—reshaping thought, establishing newer and higher ideals...in short, revolutionizing and upholding the standards which were originally laid down by this worthy organization. This is our task and we believe that the strength of mind and character is ours to make ourselves felt in whatever place we may go.”
Your participation is encouraged as this is an event that none of us will ever experience again—the celebration of 100 years of service rendered by Nu Chapter. We encourage you to register as a Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated or as a Soror of Nu Chapter. Your participation in this auspicious event will help us to achieve our scholarship goals. We also will welcome the donations of our family members, our Brothers and Sisters in Greekdom, alumni, and friends of West Virginia State University.
Please review our Schedule of Events and register before August 20, 2022. We have one deadline for registration, ads and patrons. We look forward to greeting you as we celebrate 100 years of dedicated service on the campus of West Virginia State University.
